What is a Jam Donut Shot?

The Jam Donut Shot (sometimes called a jelly doughnut shot) is a layered shot that has the sweet taste of a raspberry jam donut. The Chambord liqueur adds a sweet raspberry flavor, while the Baileys adds a creamy kick.

The first time I heard of a jam donut shot was in the HBO series, Camping, which stars Jennifer Garner. When Juliette Lewis’s character ordered a round of jelly donut shots at a bar, I knew that I had to try one!

Ingredient Notes

This shot only comprises of two easy-to-find ingredients.

Chambord: This is a French black raspberry liqueur that is sweet and fruity. It is the key ingredient in this shot that gives it its raspberry jam flavor.

Baileys Irish Cream: This is a creamy liqueur that is made with Irish whiskey and cream. It adds a smooth and creamy texture to the shot.

How to Make a Layered Shot

Layering shots is all about density. The denser liquor should go on the bottom, with the less dense liquor on top. In this case, the Chambord is denser than the Baileys, so it should be poured into the shot glass first.

To ensure the layers are distinct, use a small measuring glass with a spout for an even and controlled pour.

  • 1 – In the case of the Jam Donut Shot, start by pouring the Chambord into the bottom of the shot glass.
  • 2 – Then, tilt the rim of the shot glass slightly to the side and slowly, gently pour the Baileys down the inside wall of the glass. When complete, allow it to sit undisturbed for a few minutes for the layers to fully separate and smooth out.

Substitutions and Variations

Sugar rim: Moisten the rim of a shot glass with water or sugar syrup then dip in sugar to add sweetness and a bit of texture.

Drizzle chocolate or strawberry syrup inside the glass: This adds a touch of extra sweetness and visual appeal to the shot.

Rumchata: Instead of Baileys, you can use Rumchata, which is another alcoholic cream liqueur made with rum, cinnamon, and vanilla. It is denser than the Chambord, so it should be poured on the bottom instead of the top like the Baileys.

Substitute for Chambord: You can use other fruity liqueurs like strawberry or blackberry liqueur. For blackberry liqueur, I enjoy Pimm’s Blackberry and Elderflower. Creme de cassis (currant liqueur) works great too.If you want a nutty flavor instead of fruity, try amaretto or a hazelnut liqueur (like Frangelico).

Expert Tips

  • Chill the shot glass and the ingredients before pouring to keep the drink at the perfect temperature.
  • Use a small measuring glass with a spout for a more controlled pouring when layering a shot.
  • Don’t sip on the shot, drink it quickly as once the Chambord and Baileys mingle it can begin to curdle.

FAQ

How much alcohol is in a Jelly Donut Shot recipe?

The alcohol content in a Jam Donut Shot will depend on the proof of the liqueurs used. The Chambord and Baileys in this recipe have an alcohol content of 16.5% and 17% ABV (alcohol by volume), respectively.

What is Chambord?

Chambord is a French black raspberry cognac-based liqueur that is sweet and fruity. It is made from raspberries, blackberries, and black currants. The recipe for Chambord is inspired from a liqueur that was enjoyed by King Louis XIV of France when he visited the Loire Valley in the 17th century.

Chambord is made in the Loire Valley, and it is a popular ingredient in co*cktails, especially those that call for a sweet and fruity flavor such as my Chambord Spritz or Chambord Sour.

Can you drink Baileys straight?

Yes, Baileys can be enjoyed straight or on the rocks. I like to drink it straight sometimes as a digestif or dessert co*cktail.

Do you need to refrigerate Baileys?

According to the Baileys website, Baileys does not have to be stored in the fridge. The recommended storage temperature for Baileys is 32°F to 77°F, and it should be kept out of direct sunlight.
